As soon as Jayne laid eyes on a giant shaggy dog at an animal shelter hundreds of miles from her upstate New York home, she knew she had to have him.

Jayne explained that her husband likes looking up adoptable dogs online, and as soon as they saw Cosmo the St. Bernard’s listing, they both felt the exact same way about him. It was love at first sight!

“There was a picture of Cosmo (online) just looking up at the camera like ‘please take me home,’ and he was looking right at us,” Jayne said.

Though the dog was abandoned at the Hearts United For Animals shelter by his breeder, nobody knows the real reason behind this. Shelter workers fell in love with the St. Bernard immediately, and they noticed that he was totally clueless about living indoors.

Jayne and her husband already own two pets and have two children as well as many bunnies, but they knew that their home was the perfect place for the St. Bernard, whose name is Cosmo. Though she knew it would be a long journey, Jayne began making plans to fly to Nebraska, rent a car, and drive home with their new 130-pound family member.

“When I decided … I was pretty sure that most of the world would think I was crazy,” Jayne said. As soon as she met Cosmo in person, however, she knew she’d made the right decision.

Cosmo greeted Jayne with a sniff, and they started to bond right away.

“I don’t know if Cosmo has any understanding of what’s happening, but I think he understands there’s a human here who wants to give him some love and he’s pretty happy about it,” she said.

After the long trip home, Cosmo finally got to meet his human siblings, and they hit it off right from the start! It was clear to everyone that Cosmo had finally found the loving forever home that he deserved.

In a funny twist, Cosmo can’t seem to understand how big he is, and he can often be found squeezing into tight spots better suited for one of the family’s rabbits.

“It’s nice to see him on a big space, see him spread out and put his belly on a cool floor, and just know he’s finally staying in a space, a place where can feel happy and comfortable,” Jayne said.
