August 25th marked the 80th anniversary of the release of the classic 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz, which continues to be one of the most popular movies of all time to this day.

The movie was an immediate hit because of it’s innovative use to Technicolor, amazing storytelling, and incredible songs. The movie’s theme of self-discovery can be summed up by two of it’s most famous lines: “If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard,” and “There’s no place like home.”

The Wizard Of Oz starred Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, who gets transported from her home in Kansas by a tornado to the mystical land of Oz. After becoming stuck there, she embarks on a journey to find the wizard who can get her home with the help of her new friends: the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.

Though the film was a hit from the start, it became even more popular and beloved twenty years later, when CBS began showing it on television every December. Families would wait all year for the chance to gather around their televisions and watch The Wizard Of Oz again.
