It’s always amazing to see the various types of unusual things that people can use to make art. Now, a runner has found his work going viral after he started using a run tracking app to make artwork.

Lenny Maughan absolutely loves running, and after he started using a new run tracking app, he realized that the streaks he was creating could be used to make art.

There was a bit of a learning curve to this, and Lenny’s first few attempts were shaky at best. Determined to keep going, Lenny was inspired by the death of “Star Trek” actor Leonard Nimoy to create a Vulcan statue.

“I just printed out a paper map and sketched a hand shape along Market Street,” Lenny said. “The other fingers, thumb and wrist came pretty easily.”

That was back in 2015, and in the year since then, Lenny has used the app and his own running to create many other masterpieces.

A native of San Francisco, Lenny uses the streets of the city as his canvas. The app tracks the route of his run as well as his heart rate, distance, and average speed. Since he began doing this, Lenny has seen many of his pictures go viral.

Explaining that he typically runs one “picture route” a month, Lenny said he maps out his designs on paper first, and that he has made everything from cats to tacos. If he makes a mistake, he doesn’t give up on the picture and instead just incorporates it into his design.

One of his most popular pieces has been a portrait of legendary artist Frida Kahlo. How cool is this?!

We hope that Lenny continues to make his “running” art for many years to come!
