Back in April, the animal rescue group Wayside Waifs held an adoption event in Kansas City, Missouri to find homes for all of their animals. Over just 19 hours, they were able to find loving forever homes for 203 dogs, cats, and guinea pigs. Sadly, they were able to find homes for all of them except for one, a pitbull-terrier mix named Kenny.

Kenny is two years-old and had been transferred to Wayside Waifs from a shelter in Louisiana. Staffers immediately fell in love with the friendly and energetic dog, and they were shocked that none of the families at the event wanted him.

“Kenny is a fun, friendly and happy dog,” said Casey Waugh, communications and annual giving manager at Wayside Waifs. “He’s definitely a people dog! Yesterday a volunteer took him on a field trip. The volunteer described him as ‘a dream.’”

Staffers with the rescue took action making sure that Kenny would be adopted. They made him a profile on social media that featured some of his favorite activities so that people could learn what an amazing dog he really is. These favorite things he loves to do include playing at the park, using agility equipment, and cuddling on the couch.

“Lest you think I’m all about exercise and being on the go, I’m also an affectionate dog who loves attention from you,” they wrote. “I like to get my belly rubbed and I like to curl up next to you and cuddle. I also enjoy playing with toys and I can entertain myself with them if you’re busy with other stuff. I’ll make a really wonderful companion for you!”

They were also honest about the fact that since Kenny is so high energy and big, he is better off in a home without small children. Since he is an adult, they said Kenny is better off as an only dog, which is not unusual for canines his age. They even managed to get Kenny on the local news to tell his story!

What really broke everyone’s hearts is a viral photo of Kenny alone in the shelter after all his friends had been adopted. Who wouldn’t want to help him out?!

Thankfully, their efforts paid off, and Kenny was able to find the loving forever home he needed!

“Wayside’s adoption counselors could tell his new mom put a lot of thought into this adoption prior to coming to Wayside,” staffers said. “They still talked with her about his needs, such as how to provide mental and physical activity, that he needs to remain the only dog in the home, and other things that will make life with Kenny wonderful.”

We’re so glad that Kenny’s story had a happy ending, and we wish him the best of luck in the years to come!
