Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is being praised this week after he refused an order to stop signing autographs when he spotted some men who serve in the United States Army. Instead of returning to his team as directed, Mayfield took time with each individual soldier, signing autographs and posing for photos with them.

Video of Mayfield’s kind deed was posted to Twitter by local reporter Hayden Grove, who captioned it, “Baker Mayfield was called off the field by the team when autographs were supposed to be over. He refused and signed and took selfies with every soldier remaining on the field.”

The soldiers were touched by his gesture, telling Mayfield of his “biggest fans” from other cities and thanking him for taking the time to talk to them.

The NFL has been in hot water for the past few years amidst accusations of players disrespecting our country and those who serve it by kneeling for the national anthem. That’s why so many people are praising Mayfield for doing the complete opposite by honoring the military.

This comes months after Mayfield, 24, made headlines by bashing political correctness after an Ohio school made the news by dropping valedictorian and salutatorian honors because of sensitivity to students who don’t win the awards. The school also said that they were taking the “mental health” of their student body into account when making the decision.

“This is so dumb,” Mayfield tweeted of the decision. “You’re telling me competition doesn’t bring out the best in people? If you want something bad enough, work for it. People are too soft.”
