An anonymous person’s rude note to a struggling neighbor has inspired an entire community to rally around a family in need.

Before receiving the letter last month, Randa Ragland and her family were going through a very tough time. She had been diagnosed with health issues, her husband had lost his job, and her 3-year-old son Jaxen—who is autistic and nonverbal —had been diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma right before his birthday. Jaxen was hospitalized over twenty times and had to undergo seven surgeries.

Just when it seemed like things could not get any worse, Randa opened her mailbox in Pinson, Alabama, to find an unaddressed note from a neighbor slamming her for her unkept lawn. The note said that her lawn had fallen into such disrepair that its appearance was “affecting the resale value” of their homes and that Ragland needed to “do better.”

“At first, I felt a little angry,” Randa said. “But so much has been going on with us and our family. I just didn’t have the energy to be negative.”

Randa decided to post the note to Facebook in the hopes of encouraging people to be patient with their neighbors, as we never know what they are really going through. The post quickly made the rounds in her community, and the very next day, a team of lawn care service members showed up to take care of her grass. On top of that, dozens of volunteers showed up with chainsaws to clear away tree debris, and people brought groceries from the store, while others cleaned up the house.

The volunteers formed a Facebook page dedicated to helping the Raglands, even though many of them had not even met the family before.

“I’m in amazement. I’m still in shock,” Randa said. “I don’t have a large family. My mom is gone, my dad is gone, my brother is gone, so this means a lot.”
