Every mother never forgets the moment she lays eyes on her baby for the very first time. Getting to hold your baby for the first time is an unforgettable experience, and mothers love looking their baby over immediately to see which parent they got their physical features from. For Judith Nwokocha, however, the moment of holding her twin babies was even more unforgettable than it is for the average mother.

After undergoing two rounds of IVF, Judith was overjoyed when she learned she was expecting twins. She talked to her babies throughout the pregnancy, praying every day that it would go smoothly. All was going well until one of the twins stopped growing at 37 weeks, and doctors induced Judith immediately. Once the twins were delivered, her son Kami was 6.1 lbs., but her daughter, Kachi, was just 3½ lbs. As soon as she saw Kachi, it was clear that this was not the only thing that made her different.

“The first time I saw her, I wondered if the nurse was handing me my baby, or someone else’s,” Judith said. “I waited a few seconds for someone to tell me there was a mix up, but all I heard from the nurse was how beautiful she was.”

As a black woman, Judith never expected to have a white baby, but that’s exactly what Kachi was.

“I was quite surprised by how white she was,” Judith wrote, adding that doctors soon told her that Kachi was albino.

Though Judith was worried at first about the health challenges that come with albinism, she quickly realized just how special her daughter was.

“I always tell her how beautiful she is, because she really is,” Judith said. “I wouldn’t trade her condition for a million dollars because she’s perfect to me in every way. Albinism may have its challenges but I’m teaching her to be strong and conquer whatever may come her way. I’m showcasing the beauty in albinism by constantly taking pictures of her and twin brother. I’m not sure she’s aware of her uniqueness at the moment, but eventually she’ll know, and it’s my responsibility to educate her and teach her to love herself no matter what.”
