A Colorado man is being hailed as a hero this week after he adopted all of the overlooked animals from his local animal shelter.

Steve Grieg grew up with multiple animals in his house, and he has continued helping out animals in need as an adult. He now lives on a large piece of property, and he has always had at least three or four dogs at a time.

Sadly, one of Steve’s dogs recently passed away, and he really wanted to do something to remember the canine by. That’s why he went to his local animal shelter and asked for the “least adoptable” dog, wanting to give the animal a new shot at life.

“So [I adopted] a 12-year-old Chihuahua [named Eeyore] with a heart murmur and four bad knees and I brought him home and that was just the beginning of all the animals,” Steve said.

That’s how Steve got started adopting senior dogs, and he currently has ten living with him. On top of that, he’s adopted two pigeons and two ducks who needed a home, and he even took in a pig named Bikini from a friend who wasn’t able to keep her. Bikini has gotten so used to her new home that she now think she’s a dog, and she’s especially close to Steve’s Irish Wolfhound, Enoch.

Steve says that adopting senior dogs is great because they are low energy and well-behaved.

“They’re just wiser animals,” Steve said. “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.”

Steve has started an Instagram page to document life with his animals, and he already has over 300,000 followers.

“They just makes it feel like home,” he said. “It’s just fulfilling knowing that these guys are happy and loved and well-taken care of. It makes my days worthwhile.”
