Disaster nearly struck a plane flying from Manchester to Funchal, Madeira earlier this week when a pilot passed out in the middle of the flight. Thankfully, an off-duty pilot was on the plane as well, and he stepped up to save the day!

The incident occurred on Monday morning on a Jet2 flight, with the airline confirming that an “onboard medical situation” occurred on flight LS765 from Manchester to Funchal. An off-duty pilot happened to be onboard at the time, and he was able to take over and make an emergency landing in Porto, Portugal.

“We would like to apologize to customers traveling on #LS765 from Manchester to Funchal, Madeira which has diverted into Porto, Portugal due to an onboard medical situation,” the airline posted on Twitter. “We are working to get you on your way ASAP. Please see our agents ‘Portway’ at Gate 2 for more info.”

A spokesman for Jet2 released a further statement explaining what happened.

“Flight LS765 from Manchester to Funchal diverted to Porto as a precautionary measure this morning, due to one of the pilots feeling unwell,” the spokesman said. “A standby aircraft and replacement crew will be flown to Porto so that we can get customers on their way to Funchal as soon as possible.”

A man who was a passenger on the flight said that the pilot was wheeled off the plane in a wheelchair and was wearing an oxygen mask.
