Senior citizens who are retired are always looking for ways to save money. That’s why we’ve compiled five things that they can buy for free or discounted that they might not know about.

National Parks And Historic Sites

Folks over the age of 65 can obtain a senior pass that will give them free lifetime admission to more than 400 national parks and historic sites. This pass can be purchased from a one-time charge of $10, or it can be bought online for $20. You should probably buy this now if you’re interested because the U.S. Congress is reviewing these programs, so you can expect prices to change in the near future.

Amtrak Discounts

Travelers over the age of 62 are eligible for a 15 percent discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains. These trains are a great way to see the country, especially up and down the East Coast Corridor.

New York City Discounts

When in New York City, people over the age of 65 can show a government-issued photo ID and get a 50 percent discount on subways and busses. Seniors can purchase reduced fare Metro Cards at subway tollbooths or just drop in the exact change when entering a bus. Getting to the airport can be very expensive, so the Newark Airport Express offers seniors the chance to pay only $8.50 one-way.

Fitness discounts

If you enjoy exercising and are a senior citizen, you should look into Silver Sneakers. This national organization helps seniors find free gyms, exercise programs, and classes covered by their policies. You can go to their website  silversneakers.com if you want to learn more about this.

Walgreens Discounts

Everyone has a Walgreen in their community. What you may not know about the store is that on the first Tuesday of every month, 20 percent discounts are offered to all Walgreens Balance Rewards card holders who are 55 years old and older. You can go to walgreens.com if you are interested in getting this card.
