Learning good money management is one of the most important things that someone can do. That’s why Shaketha McGregor decided to start teaching her kids about it early.

When her three children came to ask her for an allowance, the single mother from Georgia decided to make them work for it. She informed them that they would need to get jobs if they wanted an allowance, and that she was hiring.

Shaketha first came up with the idea during a shopping trip with her three children, 13-year-old Jahkeem, 10-year-old Takeia, and six-year-old Serinity. She gave each of them some money to buy whatever they wanted, and she noticed that they became more cautious about their spending when they had cash in their hands, even checking the prices thoroughly. She found this encouraging and thought this was the perfect time to teach them about earning and budgeting money.

“My children continue to ask for a new cell phone, an allowance, and to go places. Yesterday I told them that I’ve heard their requests and that I’ll have a surprise for them today when they get home from school,” Shaketha wrote on Facebook. “SURPRISE! It’s a whole hiring event!”

Shaketha posted help wanted ads in her home for kitchen manager, lead housekeeper, and laundry supervisor jobs. Her kids had the opportunity to apply for the jobs they wanted and go through the interview process. She even created a “Mom’s Credit Union” to help them understand credit!

Serenity and Jakheem both applied to be lead housekeeper, with Serenity getting the job because she wrote that she could start the position immediately, which impressed her mother.

Sheketha informed Jakheem that he had been turned down for the job in a rejection letter, telling him that he could be the kitchen manager instead because neither of his siblings wanted to wash dishes.

Meanwhile, Takeia got the job of laundry supervisor after nailing the interview with an exaggerated British accent.

“I think she thought it made her sound more polished and desirable,” Shaketha explained. “She really thought it would help her.”

Sheketha’s post about her job fair quickly went viral, with parents everywhere saying it was a great idea. Not only will it teach kids about hard work and earning money, it also allows them to have fun!
