It has been an incredibly rough summer for Duane “Dog” Chapman. First, his beloved wife Beth passed away at the end of June at the age of 51 after a long battle with cancer. Then, a burglar targeted the family and stole many of Beth’s personal things. Now, things have gotten even worse for Dog, as he was targeted in a massive $430,000 scam.

The scam all started last month, when Dog got an email from Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the real Deputy Prime Minister of United Arab Emirates. The email offered Dog $430,000 to fly to Dubai and make a speech at an economic empowerment convention for small business owners on August 31.

Dog’s management team responded with a sophisticated contract, and in response, he was sent a $430,000 that was indeed very real. By that point, however, they had noticed many red flags. First of all, all communication was made only by email, and then Dog’s manager was asked for his own personal banking account information, as organizers claimed that they were trouble wiring the funds to his business account. Dog and his manager decided to walk away at this point, yet they were still sent the massive check.

Police say that many celebrities have been targeted with scams like this one, and that had Dog deposited the check, disaster would have struck.

“If Dog had deposited the check, the funds would vanish from his account a few days later,” TMZ reported. “So, if he’d sent back the $250k, it would’ve come out of his own pocket.”

It’s virtually impossible for these scammers to be caught, so Dog dodged a major bullet. It’s a shame that these lowlifes would target him when he’s still just trying to grieve for his wife.
