Peyton Madden is just your typical kid from El Dorado, Kansas who loves superheroes, hanging out with his friends, and biking around his neighborhood. The one thing that makes Peyton different, however, is that he is allergic to sunlight.

Peyton was only 3 years-old when he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called xeroderma pigmentosum, which only affects about 250 people in the United States. This condition makes it so that Peyton’s skin is unable to repair itself after being in the sun, and whenever he does go outside during the day, he has to wear protective clothing over every inch of his skin.

Peyton’s condition stops him from taking part in many of the daily activities that the rest of us take for granted, and when his town heard this, they knew they had to do something to help him. Back in 2017, the entire town of El Dorado teamed up with the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) to create a special event in which they turned “daytime into nighttime” for Peyton.

The little boy had no idea what was planned for him until he biked into town that night and found that everyone in the community had shown up to give him a truly unforgettable “day.”

Video showing this special “day” has quickly gone viral, touching the hearts of social media users all over the world.

“Best community in the world!!! Hope this becomes a tradition for this community!!” one social media user commented, with another adding, “Seeing how one town came together to show support for Peyton (and promote understanding of a rare disease) helps restore my faith in humanity! (And makes this transplanted Midwesterner proud to claim Kansas as my home state!).”
