A video is going viral this week that tells the story of a community coming together to help a little boy who was being bullied for his teeth.

Evan Hill is a 12 year-old boy who had a severe overbite that is often called “buck teeth,” and at school he was known as “rabbit boy.”

Bullying wasn’t the only problem caused by Evan’s buck teeth, as he also had trouble talking and couldn’t close his mouth completely because the way his teeth had grown.

Evan appeared on national television in his home city of Christchurch, New Zealand to tell his story, which touched the heart of his community. While New Zealand has free medical and dental care for kids under the age of 18, Evan’s case did not qualify for this because the work he needed was so extensive.

It was going to cost Evan’s family $12,000 to fix his teeth, and his family could not afford this enormous sum. They would need to remortgage their house to pay for the dental work, and making matters even worse, they’d just had an earthquake that destroyed their car, making it hard to get Evan to dental appointments.

The community quickly rallied behind Evan, and donations started to come pouring in. His family was stunned when they raised $100,000, far more than their $12,000 goal!

When an orthodontist finally saw Evan, he said that he had one of the worst overbite cases he’d seen in his 25 year career. It took years of braces and other forms of dental work, but Evan’s overbite is finally gone! Now, the boy is not afraid to smile.

“I don’t know where we would have been today without the generosity we had,” said Evan’s mother Barbara. “We looked at probably mortgaging our house to pay for them but this came up and blew me away.”
