A Tennessee community just came together to build a custom swing set for an autistic man who was too tall for swings.

Cobey Thomas of Knoxville has always loved swinging on swings because the rhythmic swaying of a swing is extremely therapeutic for his sensory issues. Jenifer Bright Thomas, Cobey’s mother, explained that he is always much calmer after spending some time on the swings.

As Cobey got older, however, he found himself outgrowing normal swing sets, since he ended up growing to six feet ten inches tall!

Cobey soon started coming home with bruises from swings at the local park, and Jenifer then knew she had to do something. She started trying to find companies that would build a custom swing set for her, but all of them refused to do so because of insurance liabilities. Thankfully, everything changed for her when she tried one more company.

When Allen Ellison, owner of Mr. Handyman, heard Cobey’s story, he knew he had to help him, as he had been looking for ways to give back to his community. When he told his team about Cobey, they all agreed to build the swing set for him for free!

“We just get excited about those types of opportunities to give back,” Allen said, and sure enough, his team showed up at Cobey’s house just after Christmas to build a 10-foot swing.

Once the swing was done, Cobey could not wait to hop on and try it. As he swung on his swing for the first time, the construction workers found themselves tearing up.

It was only afterwards that Allen told Jenifer that he would not be charging her, and she could not believe her ears when he said this!

“It was like the best Christmas gift ever!” she said. “It was just such a kind gesture. They didn’t have to do that.”

This just goes to show that there really are still good people in the world. Find out more about this in the video below.
