A 15 year-old girl is being hailed as a hero after she saved the life of her father when he had a seizure in the family pool.

Abra Merlino is a mother of two who pulled into her driveway in Ventnor City, New Jersey recently to see a police car out front and sirens drawing closer. This is every mother’s worst nightmare, and Abra immediately bolted through the house to find officers tending to her husband Nick. She had no idea what had happened, all she knew was that while Nick was still breathing, his eyes were closed and he was unresponsive.

Abra later learned that while she was gone, Nick had decided to cool down from his workout by going for a swim in the pool. All he remembers is stepping into the pool, and he blacked out seconds later.

“It was weird,” he said. “I remember I had my flip flops on and all. I remember coming out and stepping in the pool. That’s it. That’s all my memory tells me.”

It turns out that Nick has type 1 diabetes, and he had his first seizure ever in the pool that day. If it wasn’t for two teenagers, his 15-year-old daughter Lauren and her friend Julia who were the only ones at home, Nick undoubtedly would have died that day.

“We saw him and he was just in the pool at first and we looked out again and it looked like he was seizing in the pool and then we just came down,” Lauren explained.

Dramatic security footage captured the moment Nick’s daughter saved his life, and the harrowing video is now going viral. Nick could not be more grateful to Lauren for saving him.

“I said if she wasn’t here in a minute I’m dead,” Nick said. “You don’t last long in the water in the heat. That’s what I thought. I would have died if she didn’t come.”
