It’s hard to imagine being 107 years-old. The lucky few who have made it to that age have seen countless things in their lifetime, and Louise Signore is one of these people.

Louise was born in Harlem, New York in 1912, and she moved to the Bronx when she was 14. She then proceeded to live there for the next 93 years. Now, Louise is speaking out to reveal her one secret to living a long life.

“I think the secret of 107: I never got married,” Louise said. “I think that’s the secret. My sister says ‘I wish I never got married.’”

Louise made sure to add that she also lived an active life.

“If they have exercise, I do the exercise,” she explained. “If they have dancing, I dance. I still a do a little dancing. After my lunch, I will play bingo, so I had a full day.”

These days, Louise is not as healthy as she has been in the past. She is legally blind, and recently battled a severe bout of pneumonia, and on top of that, she survived an assault and robbery in her apartment building four years ago. Even through all of this, Louise has maintained her upbeat personality and her great sense of humor. As well as her other secrets, staying connected to her community has also played a huge role in helping Louise survive this long.

“I think that her connection with her neighbors in the community and also her friends here at the senior center help to keep her going,” said Aisha Parillon, the senior director of JASA, an organization that runs senior centres in New York City.

Whether her secret is friends, exercise, or an aversion to marriage, it can’t be denied that Louise has lived an incredible life! Her secret could also be down to genetics, as her sister is turning 102 this year.
