Any animal lover who has ever gone to an animal shelter knows how difficult it is to just save one animal while leaving the rest behind to uncertain fates. When a Canada woman recently found herself in this position, she came up with an unusual solution that saved the lives of all the animals in the shelter!

Danielle Eden is an animal lover from Ontario who has spent her life saving dogs. She is the cofounder of Dog Tales Rescue and Sanctuary, a 50-acre rural sanctuary that she brings animals to after saving them from the cages that they are trapped in.

Originally from Israel, Danielle often returns their with her husband to rescue more animals and bring them back to her sanctuary.

“On our trips to Israel we visit local shelters and work with the staff and volunteers to make lists of 10-20 dogs at a time to bring to our rescue,” Danielle wrote on Facebook. “On these trips we look for the difficult cases – dogs that are senior, dogs that have disabilities, and dogs that have been waiting for a home the longest. Making these lists is gut wrenching , however it is usually quite clear which dogs need our help the most.”

In 2016, Danielle and her husband visited a rural animal shelter in Israel that had become overcrowded. Though she had seen many dogs in horrific situations, nothing could have prepared Danielle for what she saw in this facility.

The shelter had 250 dogs even though they only had a capacity of 70. The dogs were jammed into tiny kennels, and there wasn’t enough food for all of them.

“There were as many as 6 dogs in each cage, all fighting over the loaves of bread that they were being fed,” Danielle wrote. “Rats were everywhere, and the dogs, most of whom had been there for years, were terrified. For once, it was not obvious to us which dogs needed us the most. They all needed us.”

Danielle and her husband knew they had to do something, and they went above and beyond by buying the ENTIRE shelter. Once they had the shelter, they began the process of transporting the dogs to Canada. They assembled a team in Israel, and after two months, they were able to get 90 of the dogs to Canada. The other 150 followed in the next few months as well.

Danielle shared a photo of the Israeli shelter to social media to show how horrific the conditions were there, and it quickly went viral. Much to her joy, she was then flooded with applications from people offering to adopt the dogs. Just one month after arriving in Canada, 25 of the dogs were adopted into forever homes!

In the three years since then, almost all of the dogs have been adopted, all because Danielle and her husband cared enough to move mountains so they could have better lives. Find out more about her rescue in the video below!
