If you find yourself feeling anxious and stressed out, you might want to take a few minutes and go outside to enjoy some nature. That’s because a new scientific study has found that if you’re stressed at work, going outside for twenty minutes each day could make you a whole lot happier.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan found that spending time out in nature can drastically reduce stress levels. Researchers concluded this after taking saliva samples from participants before and after being in nature and then testing the samples for the stress hormone cortisol. Their findings were nothing short of incredible.

“We know that spending time in nature reduces stress, but until now it was unclear how much is enough, how often to do it, or even what kind of nature experience will benefit us,” said Mary Carol Hunter, one of the lead authors of the study. “Our study shows that for the greatest payoff, in terms of efficiently lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol, you should spend 20 to 30 minutes sitting or walking in a place that provides you with a sense of nature.”

The researchers ended up concluding that 20-30 minutes in nature was the best amount of time to reduce stress and make you happier. Even just going out to a park in the city for this amount of time could be enough to drastically reduce stress levels and improve your mood.

Next time you are feeling stressed or down, go outside and take a quick breather. It may just turn your entire day around!
