Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just scored a major honor when they were named to Time’s 25 Most Influential People On The Internet list.
In the piece for the magazine’s fifth annual list, Harry and Meghan’s Instagram account Sussex Royal was praised. The royal couple has been using the account to raise awareness about their causes and to keep their fans up to date about what is happening in their lives.
Harry and Meghan made it clear that they wanted to strike out on their own earlier this year when they separated their living situation from Prince William and Kate Middleton by moving to Frogmore Cottage. They then created their own Instagram account, which immediately became extremely popular, garnering over a million followers in the first six hours. Currently, the royal couple has nine million followers and counting!
The Instagram account was also where Harry and Meghan gave updates on Baby Sussex while their fans eagerly awaited his arrival. They even used it to officially announce his birth to the world!
“While baby photos are among @SussexRoyal’s draws, most posts are dedicated to the pair’s work as royals. Indeed, no discussion of the Sussex’s Instagram would be complete without noting how Archie’s arrival gave them quite the adorable boost,” reporter Raisa Bruner wrote in the Time piece.
“Each month, in an effort to highlight advocates and organizations focusing on issues such as climate change and mental health awareness, the account rotates the users it follows—a savvy strategy that has driven headlines,” Bruner added.
She went on to praise Harry and Meghan for carving their own identity in the royal family.
“The Sussexes’ forward-thinking, cause-oriented approach to social media fits neatly with other ways they are establishing their identity beyond the crown,” Bruner wrote.
