These days, it often seems like only negative stories about police officers are reported in the news. That’s why it’s so great that a positive story about a cop is going viral this week, showing how kind and generous police officers really are.

Cpl. Dean Peck of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office in Naples, Florida recently decided to bring some flowers to the home of a family friend who was battling an aggressive form of cancer. When he saw her front yard, however, he realized that she needed a lot more help from him than he initially thought.

Peck was particularly saddened to see the yard because he knew that back when his friend was healthy, she loved being outside tending to her yard. It is only because of the grueling cancer treatments that she has been left too weak to take care of her yard, causing it to fall into a state of disrepair. The house looked incredibly dirty to Peck, and the normally cared for garden was completely overgrown with weeds.

When Peck went back to work that day, he mentioned how bad the house looked to his coworker Sgt. John Gogia, and word quickly spread around the office. Gogia was the first to step up and volunteer to help Peck fix up the yard, and by the time the weekend rolled around, a total of 15 people had signed up to help as well.

When Saturday rolled around, the team showed up at the woman’s home with a pressure washer and 100 bags of mulch they had purchased themselves. They then got to work washing the house and brick pavers, pulling weeds, planting and tending to the long-neglected garden space. Their goal was to create a “virtual oasis” that would bring the woman peace as she fought her cancer battle.

After four hours of hard work, the home and garden looked beautiful once again. This just goes to show that the best gardens really are the ones that are tended with love!

Sheriff Kevin Rambosk shared photos of their efforts to social media, and they quickly went viral.

“Brings tears to my eyes!! We need more of this!” one social media user commented, with another adding, “Beautiful results that are certain to lift her spirits. Thank you for these extraordinary efforts.”

This is a perfect example of all the positive things police officers do to help their communities every day. God bless ALL of our nation’s men and women in blue!
