All of us have heard about the dramatic decline in the bee population all over the world, and now, Hollywood star Morgan Freeman is doing something about it.

The bee population decline is very bad because bees play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Bees are responsible for 80 percent of pollination, and if this process does not occur, food will not grow. It has been estimated that bees are responsible for 90 percent of the world’s nutrition, so they must be saved at all cost.

To help save the bees, Freeman is using 124-acres of his own land in Mississippi to protect hundreds of thousands of these insects. He’s been beekeeping in his free time ever since 2014, when he first learned that bees were in trouble.

In the years since then, he has installed 26 bee hives on his Mississippi ranch and planted clover, magnolia trees, and lavender to make it the perfect home for bees.

“There is a concerted effort for bringing bees back onto the planet… We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation,” he told Jimmy Fallon in a recent interview.

Freeman went on to say that he does not need any protection from his bees.

“I have not ever used the beekeeping hat with my bees,” he said. “They haven’t stung me yet, as right now I am not trying to harvest honey or anything, but I just feed them…I also think that they understand, ‘Hey, don’t bother this guy, he’s got sugar water here.'”

When Fallon said he was worried about him not wearing any protective gear, Freeman joked that he has a special relationship with the bees and that beekeeping suits were simply for people “who can’t resonate” with the creatures.

Freeman’s bees are from Arkansas, and since they are knew to the Mississippi environment, he has to tend to them quite a bit. The actor feeds them with a combination of 2 parts sugar and one part water which goes into a feeder that he then sticks into the hive.

Freeman isn’t the only Hollywood star who has taken up beekeeping, as others like Leonardo DiCaprio, Scarlett Johansson, and Martha Stewart have started doing it as well. Hopefully, with Freeman and other celebrities raising awareness about this, the bee population will greatly improve.
