The city of Las Vegas, Nevada has just introduced a new initiative that is allowing people to pay off their parking tickets in a unique way that will help their community.

The city council just unanimously approved a month-long program that will allow drivers to pay off their parking tickets and other driving infractions by donating school supplies and other materials that can be used for educational purposes. As long as the motorist has not been fined for a public safety-related incident, he or she can get rid of their debt by donating supplies such as pencils, pens, erasers, dry erase markers, paper towels, copy paper, rulers, scissors, and pencil sharpeners.

The program launched on June 19, and it is set to run through July 19. The rules are that the donations must be made within thirty days of the infraction, and the supplies must be “new, unwrapped school supplies of equal or greater value to their fine to the Parking Services Offices.”

The supplies are all being donated to the Teachers Exchange, a nonprofit that is associated with the Public Education Foundation.

This is not the first time that Las Vegas has experimented with replacing parking fees with charitable donations. Back in July of 2016, the city council put in place an ordinance that authorized the establishment of this occasional program allowing for charitable donations in lieu of payment for parking fines.

The city council has said that they are hoping their latest initiative will inspire other cities to try out similar measures. Find out more about this in the video below.
