We all know that fruits and vegetables are healthy for us to eat, but what we may not know is how they actually grow. That’s why we’ve compiled six different foods that grow differently than you might think they do. Scroll through these and learn a few things about how your favorite foods grow!

Sesame Seeds

If you thought these were like sunflower seeds, growing in the center of a flower, you were dead wrong. Instead, sesame seeds grow more like peas in a pod do. On top of that, the plants grow with the pods sprouting straight from the plant’s stem.

Artichokes

Artichokes may seem like they grow hanging off a tree, but they actually grow as the bud of a purple flower.

Pistachios

If you saw a cluster of pistachios growing on a tree, you would never think that they are actually nuts. Making them even more amazing is the fact that pistachio trees take quite a long time before they start producing these nuts. They don’t make a significant amount of pistachios for the first seven years they are alive, and they peak when they are 20 years-old.

Vanilla

While the flowers of a vanilla plant look like vanilla ice cream, the pods are green and resemble runner beans. The plants need to be specially treated and dried until they become the most common ice cream flavoring in the world.

Kiwis

Many people don’t know that kiwis start out their lives as a white tropical-looking flower. It’s only later that the flower turns into the fruit that we all know and love.

Almonds

Almonds also start out as flowers. Later, these flowers curl up into pods that turn into nuts.
