Ethiopia may have just shattered the world record for most tree saplings planted in a single day by planting 350 million of them.

The previous record was held by India, which planted 66 million trees during a 12-hour period in July of 2017. Now, however, Ethiopian officials are saying that they blew this record out of the water by planting 350 million trees in a single day.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed organized this massive tree planting event as part of his “Green Legacy” initiative, which aims to restore natural greenery to the African nation. This comes after the United Nations said that Ethiopia’s forest coverage has plummeted from 35% in the early 20th century to just over 4% in the early 2000s. Ahmed’s goal is to reverse this by planting at least 4 billion indigenous trees by October.

Ethiopian officials claim that they have already planted 2.6 billion saplings across the country. While the Guinness Book Of World Records has not yet officially confirmed that Ethiopia broke this record, Ahmed’s office said that the organization is already going through the process of compiling an official tally.

It’s so nice to see a country going above and beyond to restore it’s natural beauty! We hope that this is just the beginning of this tree initiative, and that it continues to be a huge success. Find out more about this in the video below.
