Sir Anthony Hopkins is known for being one of the greatest actors of our time. However, what many don’t know about him is that he is a proud Christian whose faith brought him to where he is today from when he was an alcoholic atheist.

Hopkins said that he became an alcoholic early in his acting career. His drinking began “innocently” enough, as he thought “that’s what you do in theater, you drink.” However, alcohol soon took over his life, and his addiction spiraled out of control in 1975.

“I was hell-bent on destruction,” he recalled. “It was like being possessed by a demon, an addiction, and I couldn’t stop. And there are millions of people around like that.”

Realizing he needed help, Hopkins went to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He had always been an atheist, but at one of his first AA meetings, he met a woman who asked one simple question: “Why don’t you just trust in God?”

Hopkins had never tried that, and he thought to himself, “Well, why not?” The changes in his life were immediate as soon as he put his trust in God.

“I could not stop [drinking], but I just asked for a little bit of help and suddenly, pow. It was just like, bingo,” he explained.

Hopkins said that just like that, his craving to drink was gone, “never to return again.” Since then, he has put all of his faith in God. When he was recently asked by journalist Piers Morgan if he believes in God to this day, Hopkins replied with an emphatic, “Yes, I do. I do.”

It’s so refreshing to see a Hollywood star who has such a strong relationship with God. We need more people like him in Hollywood!
