Hundreds of bus stops in The Netherlands have just been given eco-friendly makeovers so that they can become beautiful sanctuaries for both humans and honeybees.

All 316 bus stops in the Dutch city of Utrecht have been given green rooftops covered in sedum plants. Not only are these eco-friendly rooftops improving air quality, they are also good for helping to support dwindling pollinator populations.

In addition, city officials say the rooftops have succulents that are good for storing rain water, capturing dust particulates from the air, and providing a cooling environment in the heat of the summer months. This is just one of the ways that the city of Utrecht is trying to improve their transit shelters, as officials are also planning to instal solar panels on every single one of their bus stops in the coming years.

On top of that, the city announced earlier this year that they would be replacing their current transit vehicles with a new fleet of electric buses. They are aiming to have the new fleet deployed in it’s entirety by 2028.

Utrecht is also offering subsidies to city residents who are willing to replace their own rooftops with sedum roofing or solar panels.

“A green roof is good for a healthy and livable city … that can therefore better cope with climate problems. It helps to prevent flooding and ensures that we suffer less from heat,” the city’s website states. “A good time to install a green roof is when your old roof covering is worn out or if you still have to replace a roof with asbestos. To be eligible for a subsidy, your roof must be larger than 20 square meters – or you can also apply for a subsidy together with your neighbors to get to the 20 square meter mark.”

This is such a wonderful idea! Find out more about this in the video below.
