A quick thinking bus driver is being hailed as a hero after she saved the life of a young student by stopping him when he was about to step in front of a car.

Samantha Call has been driving buses for the Norwich City School District of New York for the past six years. Last month, she was working her usual morning route when disaster nearly struck.

Security camera footage shows Samantha stopping the bus to let a young boy exit. Just when he is about to walk out, Samantha can be seen grabbing his hood right when a car whizzes by outside. The car undoubtedly would have hit the boy had Samantha not grabbed him just in time.

“I saw the silver car coming and I dont think I even thought, I knew Matt was going to get hurt so I grabbed him,” Samantha said afterwards.

“Samantha did an outstanding job,” said NCSD Transportation Supervisor William Loomis. “All of our drivers undergo continuous training so they’re prepared to handle situations like this. We hope this video helps everyone to realize the dangers of passing a stopped school bus.”

Video of Samantha’s heroic deed has quickly gone viral, being viewed nearly one million times since the school district posted it to Facebook. School officials are hoping that the video will help the public to understand the importance of bus safety regulation. Samantha herself is happy that the video is already inspiring change in terms of bus safety.

“It’s our worst nightmare to see a student that close to danger as my student was that day,” she said. “And I can’t express how grateful I am that the congressman is going to push the issue and push the need for safer school bus stop awareness and to get the word out that this all needs to stop.”
