Steve’s Pizza is a pizzeria in Battle Creek, Michigan that typically does not make deliveries, but they just made an exception when they made a delivery 500 miles away after getting a heartbreaking phone call.

When Julie and Rich Morgan lived in Battle Creek twenty years ago, money was tight for them, but they always looked forward to their pay day because they could treat themselves to a meal at Steve’s Pizza.

The Morgans were regular customers at Steve’s Pizza until they moved 225 miles away to Indianapolis, Indiana. When it came time for Julie’s 56th birthday, they decided to make a trip to Battle Creek just so that they could treat themselves to Steve’s Pizza once again.

“I can’t possibly describe how delicious this pizza is – but several moves and all these years later, it is still the gold standard and we’ve never found a better pizza yet,” Julie said. “Rich has frequently critiqued other pizza as ‘good but, it’s no Steve’s.'”

Sadly, they had to cancel their trip at the last minute when Rich was rushed to the emergency room as he battled salivary gland cancer. Once he got their, doctors told his devastated family that he only had a few weeks to live.

Knowing how much Steve’s Pizza meant to his daughter and son-in-law, Julie’s father David Dalke secretly called up the pizzeria and “asked if the shop might send a friendly text or card to us,” Julie recalled. When Dalton Schaffer, the 18 year-old manager of the pizzeria, heard what was happening, he knew he had to do something for the Morgans.

He decided to give the Morgans two pizzas, one pepperoni and one pepperoni and mushroom, and offered to deliver them himself!

“Dalton, I want to make sure you know where I’m calling from,” David said, but Dalton was undeterred when he heard how far away they were.

“And so, while Rich and I slept, at 2:30 AM, Dalton rolled into our driveway, left the car running and delivered two extra special pizzas to my waiting family,” Julie said. “He told them we were in his prayers, and offered to help in any way he could. My dad offered to put him up in a hotel, but he refused and immediately left for the return trip home because he had to work the next day.”

“I took a couple 5-hour (energy drinks),” Dalton said afterwards. “I had to, I was super tired, but I made it and that’s what counts. It was worth it. I’m glad I did that.”

Julie concluded by saying that she was “…beyond overwhelmed and humbled by this act of genuine kindness.”

“Dalton brought our family so much joy – and the best pizza in the world – at a really difficult time,” she said. “While “thank you” hardly seems adequate – from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Dalton from Steve’s Pizza in Battle Creek, MI for making your epic middle of the night pizza delivery!”

God bless Dalton and Steve’s Pizza for going above and beyond to do something nice for a couple in need. We need more people like him in the world!
