Bobby Humphreys had owned large dogs for his entire life, and he never even thought about adopting a smaller one. However, that all changed when his life was saved by a chihuahua.

When Bobby’s marriage of 17 years came to an end, he fell into such a dark place that he considered ending his own life, but his friend Connie refused to give up on him.

“She literally just wouldn’t go away no matter how much I told her to. She had lost friends to that before and wasn’t going to lose me,” Bobby said. “My friend, Connie, had shown me what friendship really meant. No matter what I needed, she was there for me. Needless to say, I feel I owe to her quite a bit.”

One day, Connie came to Bobby and asked him for a favor. She was moving and could not take her beloved chihuahua Lady with her, so she asked if he could take her for a little bit. Though Bobby said yes, he was hesitant at first, as Lady had seemed unfriendly to him in the past.

Connie dropped off Lady while Bobby was at work, and when he got home, he approached the dog warily. He was then stunned when Lady crawled into his lap, and Connie was just as surprised when she checked in on them a few hours later!

“[Connie] swore she’s never seen anything like this, this dog hates everybody,” he said. “Lady and I have been literally inseparable ever since.”

From then on, Bobby was in love with small dogs. When Lady eventually went back to live with Connie, Bobby adopted his own chihuahua, taking in an adult dog named Kira. The chihuahua had been living in a home where the floor was caked with mud, and Bobby took it upon himself to help her trust humans again.

Bobby then decided that he wanted to raise Chihuahuas from puppyhood, adopting a baby named Harley and his sister Quinn.

Bobby has since started the animal rescue group Big Guy, Little World Sanctuary, and he has rescued over thirty chihuahuas.

“We rescue Chihuahuas who are living horrible lives, abused, starving, disabled, mental issues, etc.,” he said. “We give them either a furever home with us where they will never have to experience neglect or anything like that again, or we nurse them back to health and adopt them out! We just want to help as many babies as we can.”

God bless Bobby for all that he does for chihuahuas!
