Lauren Levy is a young mother who has gone viral by penning a piece saying that hand-me-downs are the best things that you can give a fellow mother. She made the argument that when your child outgrows their clothes, the best thing you can do is gift them to another mother.

“When I was pregnant with Luca and found out I was having a boy, a friend of my sisters gave me 3 bags full of clothes, even though she had never met me,” she wrote, adding that similar things happened with her next two children.

“Sofia’s first outfits when she was born were given to me by a friend who would have put them on her child if he were a girl, and I still have comments on how beautiful they were,” Lauren continued. “On the weekend a friend of mine loaded me up with jackets and shoes, mostly new with tags, for James. And I think it’s the nicest thing you can do for a mom.”

Lauren points out that kids are expensive to take care of, and buying new clothes for them as they grow fast quickly adds up to a lot of money. Getting hand-me-downs from other moms has made Lauren feel like she is part of a sisterhood, and she wants to pay this forward by giving hand-me-downs to more mothers.

“So when a mother gives you preowned clothes, she’s saying you’re a part of her village and this is the best way she can support you in modern times,” Lauren continued. “To all of the mamas who have given me and other mothers their children’s loved pre-owned clothes, you are amazing. Thank you for showing me and other mothers that you have our backs and that in this village of motherhood, we are all in it together.”
