Americans everywhere are in mourning today after the death of Hollywood legend Doris Day, who passed away from pneumonia on Monday at the age of 97. Now, the actress’ final wish is going viral, and it’s touching the hearts of people all over the world.

Day’s family said that she died peacefully at home in Carmel Valley, California “surrounded by close friends as she passed.” Day’s only child Terry tragically passed away in 2004 from a melanoma, but she is survived by a grandson named Ryan.

Born in 1922, Day was one of the most popular actresses in the world in the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in 39 films between 1948 and 1969. She retired from acting in the 1970s and devoted the rest of her life to being an animal rights activist. Day’s neighbors even called her the “Dog Catcher of Beverly Hills” because she would often find lost dogs and do whatever she could to reunite them with their owners. Afterwards, she would continue to check up on the dogs she helped to make sure their owners were treating them well.

In 1978, Day founded the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which has grown into a massive grant-giving foundation that funds other animal-focused charities all over the country. It has just been revealed that Day’s last wish was that she not have a funeral service, memorial, and tombstone. Instead, all she wants is for those mourning her to make a donation to the Doris Day Animal Foundation.
