Last month, we reported that the popular Christian author Rachel Held Evans was in a medically-induced coma after a battle with the flu. Now, it’s sadly been revealed that the 37 year-old wife and mother passed away early Saturday morning.

Rachel’s death was confirmed by her husband Dan, who said in a statement that she was “slowly weaned from” her medically induced coma and experiencing massive brain swelling, which “ultimately was not survivable.”

“This entire experience is surreal. I keep hoping it’s a nightmare from which I’ll awake. I feel like I’m telling someone else’s story,” Dan said. “I cannot express how much the support means to me and our kids. To everyone who has prayed, called, texted, driven, flown, given of themselves physically and financially to help ease this burden: Thank you. We are privileged. Rachel’s presence in this world was a gift to us all and her work will long survive her.”

Rachel was first hospitalized in the middle of April, taking to Twitter on the 14th to say, “If you’re the praying type – I’m in the hospital with a flu + UTI combo and a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotics they gave me. (I’m totally going to miss GOT!)”

Five days later, her husband said that his wife’s condition had taken a turn for the worse, writing on her website that she was “exhibiting unexpected symptoms,” which included “constant seizures.” In the days leading up to Rachel’s death, Dan continued to give updates, saying that doctors were trying to slowly lift her out of her coma. He explained that as she was weaned off the coma medications, Rachel’s seizures “returned” at a reduced rate, but she “did not return to an alert state during this process.”

Two days before she died, Rachel had “sudden and extreme changes in her vitals,” and doctors realized that she was suffering from “extensive swelling of her brain.”

“The team worked until Friday afternoon to the best of their ability to save her. This swelling event caused severe damage and ultimately was not survivable,” Dan said, adding that his wife died early the next morning.

Rachel wrote four books that challenged the evangelical teachings about things like the role of women in the church and the inclusion of LGBTQ people. She is survived by her husband Dan and their two children, a 3 year-old son and a daughter who is turning 1 later this month.
