The Kentucky Derby took place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, and two of the attendees were 12 year-old Dannielynn Birkhead and her father Larry.

Dannielynn is the daughter of the late Anna Nicole Smith, who tragically passed away in 2007 when the little girl was just a baby. During the derby, Dannielynn paid tribute to her mother by wearing the very same hat that Anna Nicole wore to the event in 2004.

“Kentucky Derby time once again. Dannielynn looks pretty in pink in her dress by Junona and her Mom’s hat from her unforgettable appearance at The Kentucky Derby in 2004 #KentuckyDerby2019,” Larry wrote on Twitter alongside a photo of himself with his daughter.

Dannielynn paired the hat with a light pink satin dress with ruffles and pearls looking happy and very much like a sophisticated young lady. Meanwhile, her father looked as dapper as ever in a blush-toned suit.

The derby is always a special event for Dannielynn and Larry, as they have attended the event together every year since 2010. Larry has been raising Dannielynn out in Kentucky far away from the spotlight. In September of 2017, he opened up about how she is dealing with her mother’s death as she gets older.

“She is clinging to the female teachers,” Larry said, explaining that she had been pushing him to date. “She’s clingy to her girlfriends’ moms and she’ll say things like, ‘Do you want to adopt me? Would you be my honorary mother?’ She tends to do that a lot.”

Though being a single father is tough sometimes, Larry said that he could not be more proud of the woman Dannielynn is becoming.

“The other day, she had a friend whose fish died and she said, ‘Don’t worry about your fish, it’s up there with my mom. My mom’s taking care of your fish and it’s gonna be OK,'” Larry said. “It was something that she came up with. It was true from the heart and that’s how she deals with it and I’m proud that she is who she is.”
