Squirrels are known for being some of the cutest animals in the world, but we’ve just found one breed of squirrel that might just be the cutest of them all.

The breed is called Ezo Momonga, also known as Japanese dwarf flying squirrels, and they can only be found on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

These squirrels are both shy and inquisitive, which makes them incredibly cute to look at. Their bodies are entirely spherical, which gives them a chubby look that makes them all the more adorable. It’s this look that has earned them legions of fans from all over the globe!

The squirrels are effectively nocturnal and they are herbivores who live quiet and peaceful lives. The flying part of their name comes from when they jump from tree to tree in their sub-alpine environment.

The squirrels may only be able to reach 20cm (8 inches) in length and weigh a maximum of 220g, but they don’t seem to have any natural predators. Far from being endangered, scientists have listed them as “least concern,” which is the safest rating for an animal, so they aren’t going anywhere anytime soon!

Some have said that these squirrels inspired the creators of Pokemon when they were making the character of Pikachu. We have to admit that if these squirrels were yellow, they would look a lot like this character!
