The 6th edition of “The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary”was released by Merriam-Webster last fall, and it includes 300 new words. Though some of the words were desperately needed, as the dictionary had not been updated since 2014, we’ve compiled 20 of the most controversial new words. We definitely could have done without some of these!

Ew — (interjection) used to express disgust
Sheeple — (noun) people likened to sheep
Twerk — (verb) to dance by shaking the buttocks while squatting
Yowza — (interjection) used to express surprise
Facepalm — (verb) to cover the face with the hand
Bizjet — (noun) a small airplane used for business
Puggle — (noun) a kind of dog that are a mix of pugs and beagles
Sriracha — (noun) a spicy pepper sauce
Zomboid — (adjective) resembling zombies
Bokeh — (noun) the blurred quality of a photograph
Emoji — (noun) a small computer symbol used to express emotion
Cotija — (noun) a Mexican cheese
Arancini — (plural noun) balls of cooked rice
Schneid — (noun) a series of losses
Macaron — (noun) a cookie with filling in the middle
Bibimbap — (noun) a dish of cooked rice and vegetables
Aquafaba — (noun) the liquid that results when beans are cooked in water
Hivemind — (noun) the shared ideas of a group
Bestie – (noun) a person who someone likes very much
