If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for ways to relieve stress. Now, a rather strange but creative stress relieving strategy is going viral in Japan that many have claimed to alleviate stress.

Back in 2015, a Japanese midwife developed otonamaki, which means adult wrapping, and it was first used on a mother who had just given birth. The technique involves wrapping someone up so that they are being swaddled like a newborn. The argument behind the technique is that newborns are comforted by swaddling because it simulates being in the womb, and adults can find comfort from the same sensation as well.

The massaging affect of feeling like you are in a cocoon is said to help with relaxation, reducing stiffness and improving flexibility.

To take part in this technique, you sit cross-legged on the floor and wrap up in a blanket or piece of fabric, all the while making sure your head is also tucked in. You will then need someone else to secure the blanket around you with knots, and once this happens, the other person can start rocking you gently from side to side.

“It felt warm and there was this feeling with my body,” said one mother who tried the technique. “I have never experienced this before so it’s quite hard to describe properly.”

“”It felt so good I almost fell asleep. My neck and lower back were relaxed, ” another person who tried it added. “I want my husband to learn [how to do] it.”

While some experts have doubted that this technique actually works, it won’t hurt to give it a try!
