A major mystery has engulfed the neighborhood of Belhaven in Jackson, Mississippi as an unknown person has been leaving bowls of mashed potatoes all over the place.

Bowls of different types of mashed potatoes have been turning up in all kinds of places, including on people’s mailboxes, cars, and even front doors.

“I walked outside yesterday morning at 7 a.m. and I got in my car and that’s when I noticed a while bowl on my windshield,” said Jordan Lewis, who has lived in the area for five years. “It was full of rainwater. I threw it away and I was grossed out by it.”

Michaela Lin, another resident of Belhaven, was stunned to find a bowl of mashed potatoes on her mailbox.

“I had no idea what to think when I saw it!” Michaela said, adding that it was only when she asked around that she learned this was happening to other people as well.

“I thought, ‘Oh, this is happening a lot today,”” she continued.

Sebastian Bjernegard, a local who found mashed potatoes on his porch, said that he was afraid to eat them out of fear they might be poisonous.

“Some people were thinking maybe the mashed potatoes were poisoned to kill animals,” he explained. “I didn’t taste it, I have a 3-second rule, so I didn’t touch it.”

Michaela has another theory as to what is going on, however.

“I have realized some of the ‘victims’ of the mashed potatoes are actually staff or Belhaven students or alumni,” she said. “I feel like there has to be a connection there!”

Jordan agrees that it is likely “a harmless prank by some kids or college students in the area.”

Michaela and Jordan are two residents who are trying to see the fun in all of this.

“I think they have done a good job of keeping themselves anonymous,” Michaela said. “Whoever it is, I am excited to see if they do something like this again.”

“This neighborhood does a lot of quirky things, we decorate road signs we put Christmas trees in our potholes, so it’s not surprising at all,” Jordan added. “That’s why I love this neighborhood; because they do so many strange things, but it’s definitely one of the weirdest things I’ve seen since living in Jackson.”
