Joanna Gaines is best known for the HGTV televisions how “Fixer Upper” that she has with her husband Chip. She also just wrote a new children’s book “We Are the Gardeners” with her five kids, and in it, she shared some of her family’s best gardening tips.

“We wrote this children’s book together to tell the story of our journey in the garden,” Joanna wrote. “We hope it inspires you and your little ones to get outside, get your hands dirty and grow something great!”

In the book, Joanna shared her three tips for a joyful garden, and you can scroll down to find out what her three secrets are!

1. Dig into lasting inspiration.

“The garden has always been a place that inspires me,” Joanna said. “There’s something about digging deep into fresh soil or watching new life burst from what was not long ago just a tiny seed that reinforces what a gift life is.”

Sharing her love of gardening with her children has not only allowed her to spend more time with them, it has also taught the kids about the value of hard work.

“My kids have come to love spending time in the garden just as much as I do,” she added. “It can be a great teacher!”

2. Draw butterflies with the right annuals.

Joanna said that her family began the process of making a garden by gathering in the kitchen to discuss what their dream garden would look like. That’s why they decided they needed to include zinnias, sunflowers, and cosmos. These are all flowers that attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees.

Joanna said that when planting the seeds, you should sprinkle them in areas that receive full sun. Once you have done this, you can water them once every five days, and you’ll have some beautiful flowers in no time!

3. Attract helpful critters with bug “homes.”

At one point, aphids threatened to destroy the Gaines’ family garden. That’s when Joanna’s children learned how important ladybugs are, as they feed on the pests to protect the plants.

If you want to attract ladybugs to your garden, you can build little “homes” for them near the flowers. To do this, you can begin by removing the front of a small wood birdhouse before fitting a thick tree branch into it and then drilling holes in the branch. Once you have done this, simply fill the rest of the birdhouse with cut-to-fit pieces of bamboo (at crafts stores). This will essentially create a hollow tunnel that will shield the ladybugs from the rain and from predators, keeping them safe and sound.
