Coin collecting is a popular pastime that Americans love to partake in. One of the most popular aspects of coin collecting is trying to collect all fifty state quarters. Now, it’s been revealed that one state quarter from a specific year is quite a bit more valuable to coin collectors than the $.25 it’s actually worth.

Coins that have mistakes in the way that they are made are particularly beloved by collectors. For some 2005 Kansas state quarters, the built-up gunk and grease in the diecast caused the “T” in the word “trust” to appear erased. This means that the coins look like they read “In God We Rust” instead of “In God We Trust.”

Experts at the Muncie, Indiana, Coin and Stamp Club say that while this error is a rarity, it’s likely that you could make $100 from selling one of these coins, as some internet users claim. Even so, these coins likely are worth between $25 and $75, which is quite a bit more than 25 cents indeed!

Be sure to go through your wallet and see if you have one of these 2005 Kansas quarters. If you find one, you could be in for a nice little payday that you were not expecting.

While you’re looking for this quarter, you should check to see if you have a 1943 copper penny that you could sell for an even bigger payday. During World War II, copper was badly needed for the war effort, so that year, pennies were made with steel coated in zinc. The United States Mint has stated that only about 40 pennies were accidentally struck, and if you can find one of these pennies, it might be worth six figures. In fact, one of these pennies sold for $282,000 at auction last year!
