When Don Herbert and Pastor Tim Jones first met each other, they had no idea both of their lives were about to change forever.

It all started back in October of 2014, when Don and his wife Belinda were driving around town looking for yard sales. Eventually, they found one at a nearby church, and as they walked up, Don heard beautiful gospel music coming from inside.

Don and Tim bonded right away because of their mutual love for music, and Don informed the pastor that he is a gospel singer who is part of a singing quartet. Seeing how much Don loved music, Tim invited him to sing in an upcoming revival with his church’s gospel group.

Tim did not know at the time that Don was suffering from a very serious and life-threatening health condition. They had no idea at the time that Tim would play a crucial role in saving Don’s life.

Six months before meeting Tim, Don got a liver transplant after suffering from a chronic illness for over 12 years. While the transplant was a success, his kidneys began to fail, which meant that he needed to undergo yet another life-saving transplant. Despite everything that was happening to him, Don was not worried, as he drew strength from his Christian faith.

“I had a strong faith that God was going to take care of me no matter what happened,” he said.

Belinda, however, was not nearly as confident, and she fell into a depression.

Belinda soon began to question her faith, telling God, “You told me that you wouldn’t give me any more than I can handle.” The Lord then responded to her by saying, “Well, that’s not really what I said. ‘Cause if you could always handle the things, then why would you need me? So, you need to just release it. Give me your burdens. I’ll carry them.”

Belinda decided to renew her faith in God, and she did so just in time, because he was about to test her like never before.

The very next day, doctors at Duke Medical Center found blockages in Don’s heart. This meant that he needed cardiac catherterization, but his already compromised kidneys wouldn’t survive the new surgery that he so desperately needed.

Doctors informed Don that he would need to go on dialysis until he found a kidney donor, but that could take up to seven years, if he was lucky.

“I can’t believe that God’s brought me through this major transplant, and now here I am, facing something like this,” Don said.

Belinda decided to take to Facebook to post a plea for donors.

“I am willing to be the donor but I do not have insurance coverage and we can not afford it. It is so hard to ask something so tremendous and so humbling but I want the man I love to live a long life,” she wrote. “I do want to grow old with him by my side. I am asking for help! If anyone would be interested in being the donor or help organize fund raisers or donate to raise funds to purchase insurance for me just long enough to get though the testing please message me.”

Tim saw her post, and it brought him to tears. Without hesitating, he offered to be a donor for Don even though he had only met him two weeks before.

Though the odds were 1 in 20,000, Tim turned out to be a perfect donor match for Don, showing that the Lord really was with them. When doctors began operating on Tim, they found something inside of him that really left them stunned.

They found that Tim had an aneuryism, which if ruptured, would be fatal. Had he not selflessly agreed to be a donor, Tim likely would have died.

The surgery ended up being a huge success, much to everyone’s joy!
