Police officers are people who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve members of their community, whether they are humans or animals. Now, a photo is going viral showing a Florida cop going above and beyond to help a dog in need.

Deputy Josh Fiorelli was devastated when he came upon a dog lying on the side of the road after being hit by a car.

Josh could not bear to leave the dog alone, so he sat down next to him and put his jacket over the canine while waiting for help to arrive.

“It was cold out. She was wet,” the officer said. “She didn’t have anyone there so I decided to be that person.”

“I know a lot of dogs become defensive when they get hurt,” he continued. “She was not defensive at all. She was acceptive of me trying to pet her and take care of her.”

Carlos Irizzary was walking his own dog nearby at the time, and he was so touched by what he saw that he snapped a photo and posted it online.

“This is something that you don’t see every day,” he said.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office later posted the image to their Facebook page, praising Josh for what he did.

“Deputy Fiorelli cares for an injured dog who was hit by a car and waits with him until animal control arrives,” the post read. “Thank you Deputy Fiorelli for serving with care and compassion.”

The dog ended up suffering a dislocated leg, and she is currently being treated at the Osceola County Animal Shelter. Though she will need surgery, doctors are expecting her to recover. Josh is now hoping to find the dog’s family, and he’s urging all dog owners to keep track of their pets.

“Keep an eye on them. They may only be a part of your life, but you’re their whole life,” he said.
