A 20 month-old baby boy is lucky to be alive after falling out of a sixth floor apartment window in Redmond, Washington.

Police say that the boy fell “60 to 70 feet” last Wednesday but was saved when a parked car broke his fall. Edward Lu, the owner of the car, said that he’d debated driving to work that day, but decided to bike instead. Had he driven to work that morning, it’s likely the boy would not be alive today.

James Perry, a spokesman for the Redmond Police Department, explained that the boy had been playing on a mattress next to a cracked open window as his 4 year-old sister watched him. She turned around for a second, and when she looked over again she saw her brother had disappeared.

Perry said that the little girl ran to tell her mother, saying that “something bad had happened.” Her mother immediately called police who found the boy alive and crying with serious injuries.

“It’s around 60 to 70 feet,” Perry said of the fall. “If the car had not been there, this would be a completely different story. The denting on top of the car actually suggests that it absorbed a lot of the impact from the child landing on it.”

The boy was still in the hospital on Wednesday night in “serious but stable” condition. Lu was stunned when he learned his vehicle had saved the boy’s life.

“That’s when I found out the kid had fallen on my car,” Lu said. “If I had driven in today, I don’t know what would’ve happened. We’re all lucky, I guess, that I biked in rather than driving in.”

Lu was then asked if he believes in miracles, to which he replied, “I can’t say that I do normally, but this time, man, I don’t know how else I could term it.”
