It’s always interesting to see the kinds of nests that birds create as homes for themselves. If you’re a fan of birds nests, you are going to love these enormous birds nests that were just found in South Africa!

Using telephone poles, birds have been building gigantic nests that house around five hundred birds! The nests even include two chambers, one of which is used for feeding and the other for the purpose of roosting.

The nests are built over the course of many years and can sometimes way more than a ton. The nests are built by male birds and are used as a way for them to attract a mate.

Ann and Steve Toon were recently visiting Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Northern Cape, South Africa when they came upon some of these nests, and they could not help but photograph them. The Toons said that they were “fascinated and awestruck” when they saw the nests, having never seen anything like them before.

The nests are fully insulated, protecting the birds from the 104 degree temperatures out in the sun. As the birds continue to add additions to the nests, they can grow to be over 13 feet high!

Social media users just can’t get enough of how amazing these nests are.

“Talk about living close to your neighbors! I’m also imagining how much noise they produce during daylight hours. Nothing I’d want to live near, but very impressive building skills,” one social media user commented, with another adding, “They build these large conical nests swaying upside down from the lightest branches. Just a tiny bird, quite amazing.”

It never ceases to amaze how creative and clever animals can be when building their homes!
