Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is an NBA legend who has just put thousands of his basketball treasures up for auction to raise money for underprivileged children.

The Lakers legend is selling signed basketballs, jerseys, and even his iconic game goggles as well as four of his six championship rings. The items are being sold through Goldin Auctions, and they have already garnered hundreds of thousands of dollars in bids.

Most of the money raised will be given to Abdul-Jabbar’s charity The SkyHook Foundation, which helps underprivileged children pursue STEM educations. When asked why he was giving away all of his stuff, Abdul-Jabbar said that keeping them would be hollow.

“When it comes to choosing between storing a championship ring or trophy in a room, or providing kids with an opportunity to change their lives, the choice is pretty simple: sell it all,” he said. “Looking back on what I have done with my life, instead of gazing at the sparkle of jewels or gold plating celebrating something I did a long time ago, I’d rather look into the delighted face of a child holding their first caterpillar and think about what I might be doing for their future. That’s a history that has no price.”

As of date, Abdul-Jabbar’s auction of his memorabilia has netted nearly $3 million for charity! It’s great to see someone like Abdul-Jabbar using his success to give back and help children in need!
