Katy Perry was brought to tears while serving as a judge on “American Idol” this past week as she became part of a powerful moment between a contestant and his mother.

Dimitrius Graham, 27, was getting ready to give the most important performance of his life on “American Idol,” and sadly, his mother Lorraine could not be there because she was set to have surgery the next day. As he got onstage, Dimitrius asked the judges if he could video chat with his mother before he sang his rendition of Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” as a tribute to her.

The judges could not help but say yes, and Katy told Lorraine during the chat that she hoped angels were watching over her.

“And speaking of an angel, your son is about to sing for us, and we want you to be a part of this moment,” Katy said before holding up the phone so that Lorraine could watch her son perform.

As Dimitrius sang while his proud mother looked on via FaceTime, Katy was so overcome with emotion that she could not even look at the singer. Tears flowed from her eyes as she continued to hold up her phone so that Lorraine could watch the performance.

By the end of the song, all of the judges were blown away by Dimitrius.

“Your boy did it, sweetheart,” judge Lionel Richie told Lorraine.

This is just one of many emotional moments that have been happening on “American Idol” this season. Watch the moment for yourself in the video below.
