Meet Tombili, a cat who was something of a celebrity in Istanbul, Turkey because of his laid back attitude.

Tombili became a viral sensation after he was photographed lounging on the side of the road, and he quickly earned legions of fans.

Sadly, Tombili passed away in August of 2016, but city officials want to let the world know that he will never be forgotten. That’s why they created a statue for him in his honor!

The bronze statue was built on one of Tombili’s favorite lounging spots, and it was constructed after a petition demanding that the cat be honored obtained over 17,000 signatures.

The statue was unveiled on October 4, 2016 and everyone noticed right away that it looked just like Tombili. People from all over the city have since come to the statue to pay their respects to the cat.

“You will live in our hearts. Mascot of our street, beloved TOMBILI lost his struggle for life after a month and closed his eyes to life on first of August,” one of Tombili’s fans wrote on a note left by the statue.

It’s so great to see a city come together to honor a cat in such a beautiful way. If only other cities would take care of their animals like this! Thanks to this statue, generations to come will know that there was once a cat named Tombili who brought a city together and touched the hearts of everyone who lived there.
