There’s so much negativity in the world today that it’s easy to forget that there really are still good people in the world. Thankfully, a story is going viral this week reminding all of us that there are still kind and honest people around.

The Food Basics supermarket in Kingston, Ontario was scheduled to close on February 18 for the Canadian holiday of Family Day. However, employees accidentally left the doors unlocked when they left work the day before.

The next day, a few customers entered the store confused as to why no employees were there. One would think that when store workers returned the next day, they would find the shelves virtually empty as people would have taken the opportunity to give themselves a five finger discount. Instead, only one person left the store with items, and he made sure to pay for them by leaving some money on the counter.

“I was standing there trying to decide what to do, and a guy comes out of the store with two packages of cherry tomatoes,” an eyewitness said. “So I asked ‘Hey, buddy! You just taking some tomatoes?’ He said ‘I left $5 on the counter.’”

The customer called the police, who rushed to the store and waited there until a manager arrived to lock it at 4pm. Everyone was stunned that no damage was done to the store, and that nothing was taken besides the cherry tomatoes that the customer overpaid for.

“The doors were open, and we don’t know … what’s to blame for that, but it appears that the store manager indicated nothing was seriously damaged or stolen,” a police spokesperson said.

It warms my heart to see that there are indeed still good and honest people in the world!
