A very rare yellow cardinal was just spotted in southern Alabama, much to the joy of bird lovers everywhere.

Karem Maldonado explained that she screamed when she saw the yellow cardinal in the backdoor of her home in Theodore. She describes herself as “one of those persons who are always go, go, go,” and she was sitting at home with her 6 year-old granddaughter when she saw the yellow cardinal appear at her bird feeder.

“While I was talking to her it just came and stood and looked in,” Karem said. “I started screaming. I didn’t have a phone or camera or anything.”

This happened on February 28, and when the bird appeared again on March 11, Karem was ready with her camera.

“I call it Sunshine,” she said. “It’s just amazing. There was a cat sitting on the windowsill, because I have like six cats. It stood there for a while. It looked at me with one eye, then it turned and looked at me with the other eye. Then it was gone.”

Scientists say that yellow cardinals are very rare, as they get their unique look from a rare genetic mutation. Karem suspects that Sunshine has been around for awhile and has not been noticed because he blends in with his surroundings. She saw him again last weekend, and she thinks he’ll be coming back a lot.

“I’m the one who feeds him, maybe he’s been watching me,” she said, adding that she’s been filling her feeder with sunflower seeds. “That’s what they like to eat.”

Karen concluded by saying that even if a yellow cardinal does not show up, feeding birds is a worthwhile hobby to have.

“There’s nothing more relaxing than just walking outside and listening to the birds,” she said.
