Life is full of twists and turns, and we never know where it will take us. Angela Farnan knows this all too well, as her life just took a turn in a way that she never expected.

Angela spends her days taking care of babies as a primary charge nurse at OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois. She never expected that she would end up taking home one of these babies as his mother.

Angela was working in the pediatric intensive care unit when she was charged with taking care of a baby boy named Blaze, who was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This meant that Blaze had to get two major surgeries at a very early age, with his first surgery taking place when he was just three days old.

His second surgery came a few months later, and because of his condition, Blaze had to remain in intensive care and have his own team of caregivers following his surgeries.

While taking care of Blaze, Angela became so attached to him that she and her husband agreed to take care of him between surgery. During this time, Blaze’s birth mother realized that she could not afford the intensive care that he needed, so she went to Angela with an emotional request: she asked her to adopt him.

Angela was stunned by the request. She had always wanted to be a mom, but she never expected it to happen in this way.

“I’ve always wanted to be a mother,” she explained. “And then you just have to realize and trust in God and believe that He has a greater purpose for you.”

Believing that God put her in the right place at the right time, Angela agreed to adopt Blaze and become his mother. Angela’s husband had also fallen in love with Blaze, so he could not have been happier to become his dad.
